Zombie Cinema: Comedy and Horror?
I had already planned to write this post even prior to seeing Shaun of the Dead this morning on Comedy Central. As always, I got sucked in and watched the whole thing. Like true zombie movies, parody and horror can be magic or a complete mess. Shaun of the Dead happens to be one of those magical movies that has the perfect blend of humor, fright and even gore. It is so well timed and executed and pays homage to the genre as it pokes fun at it. I must admit, I wasn’t too keen on the whole concept when I first saw the trailer for this movie. I didn’t think comedy belonged with zombie gore but I was happily proven wrong.
Another little known movie that exceeded my expectations was 2006’s Fido. It is a typical boy and his zombie movie. Think Pleasantville meets Dawn of the Dead. The movie is actually quite charming and heart-warming as it tells a quirky tale of domesticating zombies and keeping around deceased family members after their death. I know, it all sounds pretty strange, but I for one was very presently surprised when I plucked it out of the $1 rental section of my video store’s horror section. As an added bonus, my wife loved it too, and she’s had it up to her eyeballs with my quest for quality zombie movies. So dig through your video store and let me know what you think.
